Exporting a PNG for laser engraving: settings that matter
Updated October 2026 · Free browser tool · photos stay on your device
Export at the physical size and DPI you intend to run, decide once where the tonal conversion happens, and verify the file by importing it and checking the reported dimensions.
Decide the conversion point first
Everything else follows from one choice: do you export a dithered file or a continuous-tone file? Whichever you choose, the other side of the pipeline must not repeat it. See dithering and image mode.
Export checklist
- Physical size in millimetres is set and matches the job.
- DPI matches the interval you will use on the machine.
- Crop and tone adjustments were judged at final size, not on a scaled preview.
- The export is a single PNG per photo, or a batch ZIP for many photos with identical settings.
Verify after export
- Open the file and confirm pixel dimensions equal round(mm ÷ 25.4 × DPI).
- Import into the laser software and confirm the reported physical size.
- Look at the image at 100%: if the dot pattern looks broken or mushy, a double conversion probably happened.
RasterGo processes images in your browser; nothing is uploaded. The free beta does not watermark exports.
RasterGo prepares image files in your browser. Material previews are labelled digital simulations, not photographs of engraved pieces, and no power, speed or physical result is promised.
